Join us on Thursday 24/03 for an important discussion on the struggles of Palestinian peasants. This event is organized by Stichting Boerengroep and the Rural Sociology Group, in response to the decision of the Dutch government in January 2022 to withdraw their financial support for the Union of Agricultural Workers Committee (UAWC). The UAWC is an important civil society organization supporting Palestinian farmers in the West Bank and Gaza areas. The decision to withdraw the Dutch funding comes in a difficult time for Palestinian civil society organisations. In November 2021, the Israeli army declared the UAWC and five other Palestinian groups that are active in human, cultural and labour rights as “terrorist organisations”, without any clear evidence.
With this event, we want to draw attention to the issues faced by Palestinian farmers and the precarious situation the UAWC is in, due to the decision of the Dutch government to withdraw their funding.
We have invited three speakers to explain the situation, after which we will have enough time for a group discussion, with a focus on the Dutch context and the possible roles for Wageningen to play.

Christian is a lecturer International Relations and Modern Middle East Studies at the University of Leiden. His research focuses on the Arab region, with a particular focus on Gulf investment in the states of North Africa and the Levant, rural development and business politics. He is also part of the Dutch Scholars for Palestine.

Moderator: 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚 𝐑𝐢𝐣𝐤𝐞. Alexandra is a lecturer at the Cultural Geography group. In her research she analyses the daily geographies of the checkpoints in Israel/Palestine.
