We visit one of the farmers of the collective that down-scaled their dairy herd, to deal with the nitrogen crisis. Jan Willem Erisman wrote a book about their journey “De Melkvee Revolutie” – a (Dutch) must read for how the nitrogen crisis can be addressed with social transformation!
Rather than following the mainstream strategy of buying out farms or investing in expensive technologies, the group tried a different strategy of collective action and relocalization. The process took over 8 years, however, and the required a regional cheese brand and store to achieve the reduction. We will be shown around and get to ask questions, and most importantly: learn from his story! For optimal preparation, we recommend reading the book ‘de melkvee revolutie’ van Jan Willem Erisman written specifically about this case.
