In verschillende staten in India zijn boeren sinds begin augustus 2020 aan het protesteren. Ze zijn niet van plan te stoppen voordat drie nieuwe landbouwwetten ingetrokken worden. Die nieuwe wetten zullen naar verwachting hun kostwinning schaden en leiden tot meer uitbuiting van boeren door grote bedrijven. De nieuwe wetten staan onder meer directe handel tussen de grote agrobusiness bedrijven en boeren toe. Hiermee worden markten omzeild, terwijl op markten regels gelden voor (minimum)prijzen. Behalve de wetten zijn de protesten ook een expressie van ongenoegen dat lange tijd is opgebouwd tegen een steeds liberaler beleid. Op 10 maart duiken we dieper in het wat en waarom van deze protesten, en denken we ook samen na over hoe wij solidariteit kunnen betuigen.

In several states in India, farmers have been protesting since the beginning of August 2020, and they are not planning to stop until the new farm acts are withdrawn. For them, it is about protecting their livelihood and trying to prevent large agribusiness companies to exploit them. The new laws, that allow direct trade with companies and by-passing the wholesale market are the direct incentive for the protests, but there are also an expression of built-up grievances of a neoliberal policy. On the 10th of March, we will dive deeper into the what and the why of these protests, as well as look at what we can do in solidarity.
